Description of key information

Lithium nitrate does contain chemical groups (nitrogen chemically bound with oxygen) that are associated with explosive properties. But it is not considered to be explosive because of experiences in handling and use of the substance by the registrant. Further, lithium nitrate is listed in "Transported Dangerous Goods of the UN" where it is not classified regarding explosive properties.

non explosive

Additional information

Lithium nitrate is named in the Dangerous Goods List of the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods. It is classified as hazard class 5.1 (oxidising substance), PG III. Transported substances should be tested for explosiveness and classified accordingly (Class 1). Lithium nitrate is only classified as oxidising substance. It was concluded that lithium nitrate has no explosive properties and is therefore not classified "explosive".

Justification for classification or non-classification

Classification, Labelling, and Packaging Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008

According to the available data regarding handling and use of the client and the UN list of the Transported Dangerous Goods, lithium nitrate is not classified and labelled as "explosive" according Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP), as amended for the tenth time in Regulation (EU) No 2017/776.
