Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

First-aid measures

EYE CONTACT

Rinse immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Obtain medical attention immediately.

SKIN CONTACT

Remove contaminated clothing and shoes without delay. Wear impermeable gloves. Wash immediately with plenty of water. Pay particular attention to skin crevices, nail folds, etc. Do not reuse contaminated clothing without laundering. Do not reuse contaminated leatherware. Obtain medical attention.

INGESTION

If swallowed, call a physician immediately. Only induce vomiting at the instruction of a physician. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.

INHALATION

Remove to fresh air. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Apply artificial respiration if patient is not breathing. Obtain medical attention immediately.

MOST IMPORTANT SYMPTOMS AND EFFECTS, BOTH ACUTE AND DELAYED

None known

INDICATION OF ANY IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION AND SPECIAL TREATMENT NEEDS

Notes To Physician: If cholinesterase inhibition is suspected, atropine by injection is antidotal after cyanosis is relieved. Pralidoxime Chloride (2-PAM, Protopam) has shown utility as an adjunctive therapy. Do not use morphine. Continued absorption of the poison may occur resulting in total relapse after initial improvement. Very close supervision of the patient is indicated for at least 48 to 72 hours. Probable mucosal damage may contraindicate the use of gastric lavage following ingestion.

Fire-fighting measures

SUITABLE EXTINGUISHING MEDIA

Use carbon dioxide, dry chemical or halogenated agents. Do not use water because of reactivity.

SPECIAL HAZARDS ARSING FROM THE SUBSTANCE

Keep containers cool by spraying with water if exposed to fire. Reacts with water and humid air releasing corrosive hydrogen chloride gas.

ADVICE FOR FIREFIGHTERS

Wear self-contained breathing apparatus. Wear full firefighting protective clothing.

Accidental release measures

PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS, PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AND EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

Where exposure level is not known, wear approved, positive pressure, self-contained respirator. Where exposure level is known, wear approved respirator suitable for level of exposure. In addition to protective clothing/equipment, wear a two piece PVC suit with hood or PVC overalls with hood.

ENVIRONMENTAL PRECAUTIONS

Use appropriate containment to avoid environmental contamination.

METHODS AND MATERIAL FOR CONTAINMENT AND CLEANING UP

Cover spills with some inert absorbent. Sweep up into containers for disposal. Cover spill area with a slurry of industrial detergent and water and scrub thoroughly with a stiff brush. Flush spill area with water.

Handling and storage

PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES

Do not get in eyes, on skin or on clothing. Do not breathe gas or vapour. Avoid contact with moisture or water. Keep container closed. Wash thoroughly after handling.

SPECIAL HAZARDS AND REACTIVITY

Evolves hydrogen chloride on contact with moisture.

CONDITIONS FOR SAFE STORAGE, INCLUDING ANY INCOMPATIBILITIES

Material reacts spontaneously with water to form hydrogen chloride. Store and handle under an atmosphere of inert gas such as nitrogen. Store in a cool, dry, well ventilated place and keep container tightly closed. Keep product away from heat, ignition sources, and incompatible materials.

STORAGE TEMPERATURE

Store at <65.6 °C

Exposure controls / personal protection

1. TECHNICAL PROTECTION MEASURES

Triphenyl phosphate UK WEL 3 mg/m³ (TWA), 6 mg/m³ (STEL)

2. ORGANISATIONAL PROTECTION MEASURES

Utilise a closed system process where feasible. Where this material is not used in a closed system, good enclosure and local exhaust ventilation should be provided to control exposure.

3. HAND PROTECTION

Wear impermeable gloves. Consider the porosity and elasticity data of the glove manufacturer and the specific conditions in the work place. Replace gloves immediately when torn or any change in appearance (dimension, colour, flexibility etc.) is noticed.

4. FEET PROTECTION

No specific measures

5. BODY PROTECTION

Prevent contamination of skin or clothing when removing protective equipment. Wear impermeable gloves and suitable protective clothing.

6. EYE PROTECTION

Prevent eye and skin contact. Provide eye wash fountain and safety shower in close proximity to points of potential exposure. Wear eye/face protection such as chemical splash proof goggles or face shield.

7. RESPIRATORY PROTECTION

For operations where inhalation exposure can occur, use an approved respirator recommended by an industrial hygienist after an evaluation of the operation. Where inhalation exposure cannot occur, no respiratory protection is required. A full facepiece respirator also provides eye and face protection.

ADDITIONAL ADVICE

Food, beverages and tobacco products should not be carried, stored, or consumed where this material is in use. Before eating, drinking, or smoking, wash face and hands thoroughly with soap and water.

Stability and reactivity

CHEMICAL STABILITY

- Stability: Stable

- Conditions to avoid: Stable under normal temperatures and pressure. Stable below 175 °C (347 °F) in the absence of air or moisture. Avoid prolonged storage at elevated temperatures above 65 °C (150 °F).

POSSIBILITY OF HAZARDOUS REACTIONS

- Polymerisation: Will not occur

- Conditions to avoid: None known

- Incompatible materials: Acids, water, strong oxidisers, strong alkalis, aqueous solutions will attack aluminium and galvanised steel producing hydrogen gas. Alcohol, amines, mercaptans.

- Hazardous decomposition products: Oxides of carbon, oxides of phosphorous, chlorine, hydrogen chloride and phenol.

Disposal considerations

Recycling and recovery and reuse of materials are encouraged, where permitted. If disposal is necessary, organic materials, especially when classified as hazardous waste, should be disposed of by thermal treatment or incineration at approved facilities. All local and national regulations should be followed.
