Conclusion on classification

Reliable short-term toxicity tests results are available with citric acid (CAS 77-92-9) for freshwater fish, invertebrates and algae. L(E)C50 values for the three organisms were all >100 mg/l. The key algal toxicity study by Bringmann and Kuhn (1980) has a NOEC value of 425 mg/L - estimated by the reviewer based on the data available in the publication.

Citric acid has a very low log Kow and is rapidly biodegradable.

These data are consistent with the following classification under Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (as amended) (CLP):

Acute toxicity: Not classified.

Chronic toxicity: Not classified.
