Description of key information

Based on the results obtained with EU method A.10 and UN test N.1 as well as based on EU and UN screening methods for flammability in contact with water and air, the substance is considered non flammable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

In accordance with the EU A.10 test guideline, the flammability of MMDS was tested in the preliminary screening test. In contact with the flame of the gas burner, the test substance melted and turned into a brown residue. White smoke was observed. After removal of the ignition source, no propagation of combustion of the test substance along 200 mm length of the pile within 4 minutes was observed. According to the guidelines, performance of the burning rate test is not required. Based on the results obtained, MMDS is considered `not highly flammable'.

With respect to flammability in contact and water and air, the structure of the substance was evaluated in line with EU and UN screening procedures. Based oin the assessment of structural features it was concluded that MMDS is `not highly flammable' in contact with water and also not pyrophoric. The latter was confirmed through handling the test substance under normal laboratory conditions during study performance.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The substance does not need to be classified for flammability in accordance with the CLP Regulation 1272/2008.
