Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information

The ready biodegradability of the test item was determined with non-adapted activated sludge in the Manometric Respirometry Test for a period of 28 days according to OECD guideline 301 F in compliance with GLP. The test item concentration selected as appropriate was 25 mg/L, corresponding to a ThOD of 66.8 mg O2/L per test vessel. The oxygen was depleted by the respiration of bacteria and the degradation was followed by measuring the oxygen concentration. The mean oxygen depletion in the inoculum control was 7.8 mg O2/L on day 28. For the reference substance sodium benzoate, the pass level > 60% was reached after 3 days. The biodegradation rate came to a maximum of 96% on day 26. In the toxicity control, containing both test and reference item, 52% degradation occurred within 14 days. After 28 days the biodegradation came to 86%. The test item reached the 10% level (beginning of biodegradation) after 15 and 17 days, for replicate 1 and 2, respectively. The 60% pass level was reached after 19 days. After 28 days the mean biodegradation was 80%. The validity criteria of the guideline are fulfilled. Under the conditions of the study, the test item is classified as readily biodegradable meeting the 10-d-window.
