Description of key information

The toxicity of zinc, 5,5'-azobis-2,4,6(1H,3H,5H)-pyrimidinetrione complexes and melamine to algae was tested in a GLP study following OECD201. The study reported of no effects after 72 hours of exposure at the limit test concentration (ErC50 >6.84 mg/L, ErL50 >100 mg/L, NOEC > 100 mg/L).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
6.84 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
6.84 mg/L

Additional information

EC50 should read > 6.84 mg/L, the NOEC should read >= 6.84 mg/L.

The study report gives EC50 > 6.84 mg/L and NOEC = 8.84 mg/L although no effect had been determined at the limit test concentration. In the absence of an effect the NOEC should be reported as >= 6.84 mg/L. Taking into account that the water solubility of zinc, 5,5'-azobis-2,4,6(1H,3H,5H)-pyrimidinetrione complexes and melamine is low with 0.52 mg/L no effects would be expected at higher test concentrations. Concluding, the test item did not cause effects at the test concentration which is higher than the water solubility. Therefore, neither EC50 nor NOEC are relevant for PNEC derivation.
