Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no adverse effect observed (not sensitising)
Additional information:
Migrated from Short description of key information:
Acetic acid is present at physiological pH as acetate and is a key biochemical intermediate in all living organisms. There is a very rare case report of an individual with allergy to weak organic acids, including acetic acid (Tuft & Ettelson, 1956) which is not viewed of wider relevance.

Citation: Tuft MD & Ettelson LN (1956). Canker sores from allergy to weak organic acids (citric and acetic). J Allergy, vol 27 pp 536-543.

Respiratory sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no adverse effect observed (not sensitising)
Additional information:
Migrated from Short description of key information:
There are no reports of respiratory sensitisation from the available literature, nor would any be expected for this fundamental biochemical intermediate.

Justification for classification or non-classification

There is no data available to indicate sensitising potential for this ubiquitous natural product. Classification under DSD or CPL is not warranted.
