Several literature sources provide consistent data for pure chlorine dioxide; a consensus value of 1.64 for relative density as liquid at 0°C, and a mean value of 2.35 for the gas, can be retained.

The substance as registered is always generated in situ as a gas dissolved in water, with concentration not exceeding 2%. The density of this solution will be, essentially, the same as that of pure water. Considering a 20 g/L solution, and a density of 1.64 g/cm3 for pure ClO2, the theoretical relative density of the solution is calculated to be 1.008. Therefore, a further assessment of the density is scientifically unjustified.
