Duration of treatment / exposure:
Exposure time: 30 days, 7 d/w, 1 h/d
Observation period:
no data
Number of animals:
24 male guinea pigs: 12 adults and 12 controls
Details on study design:
Control animals were kept under normal environmental conditions in the exposure chamber, whereas experimental animals were exposed to the contaminated atmosphere of SO2 (10 ppm) in the exposure chamber. Animals were exposed in a specifically designed exposure chamber for testing atmospheric pollutants by inhalation. The contaminated atmosphere of SO2 in the chamber was obtained by mixing continuously ambient air at the rate of 917 l/min and SO2 9.4 ml/min at a constant rate.
The guinea pigs were killed by decapitation and organs were immediately removed for analysis.

Results and discussion

In vivo

Results
Irritation parameter:
other: observations from a 30-day repeated dose toxicity study
Remarks on result:
other: Signs of skin irritation are induced by daily 1-hour whole-body exposure of guinea pigs in inhalation chambers to exposure atmospheres containing 10 ppm sulfur dioxide in air.
Irritant / corrosive response data:
Nasopharyngitis, preening, increased immobility, skin and eye irritation were the symptoms observed following SO2 toxicosis.

Any other information on results incl. tables

Signs of skin irritation are induced by daily 1-hour whole-body exposure of guinea pigs in inhalation chambers to exposure atmospheres containing 10 ppm sulfur dioxide in air.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
Signs of skin irritation are induced by daily 1-hour whole-body exposure of guinea pigs in inhalation chambers to exposure atmospheres containing 10 ppm sulfur dioxide in air.
