Description of key information

Tartaric acid and its salts are not auto flammable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

A collection of the self-ignition temperatures was performed for tartaric acid and its salts (i.e. monosodium, monopotassium, sodium potassium, sodium, potassium and calcium tartrate). As result, two values specifically referred to tartaric acid were found . They support the non-auto flammability of the substance. Self-ignition temperature of Calcium tartrate was determined according to EU method A.16. The self ignition temperature of the test item was situated between 338.9 and 340.7 °C (corrected values).

Since the self-ignition temperature of tartaric acid and calcium tartrate is very high and taking into account the chemistry of the other salts, it is believed that the other tartaric acid salts should not behave differently.
