Description of key information

For dicumyl peroxide acute oral and dermal toxicity was determined to be > 2000 mg/kg.

Data for the inhalation route is not available. However, based on physical properties and on the known low acute toxicity of dicumyl peroxide by the oral and dermal path, an inhalation toxicity study is considered not to be scientifically justified.

Additional information

Dicumyl peroxide was tested for acute oral toxicity in rats according to OECD guideline 401. The test was performed as a limit test with one dose of 2000 mg/kg. No mortality or other effects occurred, so the LD50 is > 2000 mg/kg. In addition, results from other study support this finding.

Acute dermal toxicity was tested in rats according to OECD guideline 402. In this limit test with a dose of 2000 mg/kg. No mortality occurred, so the LD50 is > 2000 mg/kg.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the results of reliable studies reporting LD50 values of > 2,000 mg/kg for dermal and oral route classification of dicumyl peroxide for acute dermal or oral toxicity is not warranted based on EU regulation 1272/2008.
