Description of key information

The log Pow for sulfolane is < 0 at 20°C and therefore it does not meet the screening criteria for bioaccumulation (Degussa 2006). Using a QSAR approach a BCF of 3.162 L/kg is estimated. This is supported by experimental data that found sulfolane levels below the limit of detection in fish tissues resulting in a measured BCF (based on the limit of detection for the analytical method) of <1.3 (Kurume 1977). Sulfolane is not bioaccumulative.

In a non-standard guideline, non-GLP test the BCF of Sulfolane in Cyprinus carpio was <1.3 (Kurume 1977). The measured concentration of sulfolane in fish was below the limit of detection for the analytical method.

Sulfolane is expected not to be bioaccumulative.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex IX, the bioaccumulation in aquatic species study does not need to be conducted as the substance has a low potential for bioaccumulation (the substance has a log octanol water partition coefficient less than 3).

A single exisiting study is available. This non-GLP, non-guideline study (Kurume, 1977) found that the BCF of the test substance in Cyprinus carpio was less than 1.3 (the limit of detection of the study). This is supported by QSAR data.

Sulfolane is therefore expected not to be bioaccumulative.
