After evaporation or exposure to the air, the substance will be rapidly degraded by photochemical processes.

According to Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 Annex VIII column 2 a study on hydrolysis does not need to be conducted if the substance is readily biodegradable. 2 -Ethyl-4 -methylimidazole (CAS 931 -36 -2) is readily biodegradable (BASF AG, 2005; report no. 21G0379/053109). An experimental investigation of its hydrolytic properties was considered as scientifically unjustified.
