First-aid measures

On contact with eyes : Rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice.

On skin contact : Rinse immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Obtain medical attention.

If inhaled : Remove to fresh air.

On ingestion : Do not induce vomiting. Obtain medical attention immediately.

Fire-fighting measures

Suitable extinguishing media : On large fires use medium expansion (>30:1) AFFF alcohol compatible foam. On small fires use medium expansion (>30:1) AFFF alcohol compatible foam, CO2 or dry sand. Water can be used to cool fire exposed containers.

Unsuitable extinguishing media : Do not use water. Dry powder. Do not allow extinguishing medium to contact container

contents.

Hazards during fire fighting : Vapours are heavier than air and can travel along ground to remote ignition sources. Electrostatic charges may be generated during transfer of product from its container. Ensure that all equipment is electrically earthed. Fire releases dense, irritating, and corrosive hydrogen chloride fumes. Chlorosilanes react vigorously with water. Do not apply water directly to the fire. In some cases it may be better to let fire burn until expert assistance is obtained. Material may reignite after fire is extinguished. Vapours may form explosive mixtures with air.

Special protective equipment/procedures : A self-contained respirator and protective clothing should be worn. Spill clean up may

require special clothing. Determine the need to evacuate or isolate the area according to your local emergency plan. Fires are difficult to extinguish by conventional methods. Do not put water directly on the fire, however water may be used to knock down the corrosive vapor cloud down wind of fire. Apply medium expansion (30:1) AFFF alcohol compatible foam. Applying foam initially will release significant amounts of corrosive

hydrogen chloride vapours which will be reduced when uniform blanketing is achieved. Use water spray to keep fire exposed containers cool. Do not allow any extinguishing media to enter container. Applying foam will also release significant amounts of flammable hydrogen gas that can be trapped under the foam blanket.

Hazardous Combustion

Products : Thermal breakdown of this product during fire or very high heat conditions may evolve the following decomposition products: Silica. Carbon oxides and traces of incompletely burned carbon compounds. Formaldehyde. Hydrogen. Chlorine compounds.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions : Wear proper protective equipment.

Environmental precautions : Prevent from spreading or entering into drains, ditches or rivers by using sand, earth or other appropriate barriers. Inform local authorities if this cannot be prevented. Methods for cleaning up : Eliminate all possible sources of ignition. Determine the need to evacuate or isolate the area according to your local emergency plan. Mop, wipe or soak up with absorbent  and place in a vented container. Soak up with sand or other noncombustible absorbent material and place in a container. Do not get water on spilled material. Very large spills should be contained by bunding, etc... procedures. Applying foam initially will release significant amounts of corrosive hydrogen chloride vapors which will be

reduced when uniform blanketing is achieved. Applying foam will also release significant amounts of flammable hydrogen gas that can be trapped under the foam blanket.

Handling and storage

Advice on safe handling : General ventilation is required. Local ventilation is required. Avoid skin and eye contact.

Do not breathe vapour. Do not ingest.

Advice on storage : This product slowly evolves hydrogen on storage. Keep container closed and store away from water or moisture. Store in a flameproof, well ventilated area. Electrostatic charges may be generated during transfer of product from its container. Ensure that all equipment

is electrically earthed. In general chlorosilanes containing Silicon-Hydride (SiH) must be stored in pressurized packaging but some exceptions do exist. In any case the material should not be repacked without guidance from Dow Corning’s packaging experts. Vapours may form explosive mixtures with air.

Unsuitable packaging materials : Do not store in or use glass containers.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Engineering equipment : Local Exhaust ventilation (LEV)

Personal protection equipment:

Respiratory protection : Suitable respiratory protection should be worn if the product is used in large quantities, confined spaces or in other circumstances where the OEL may be approached or exceeded. Full-face respirator with ABEK-filter; Goggles or face shield; and Self-contained, positive pressure breathing apparatus (for prolonged or high exposures)d. The choice of a filter type depends on the amount and type of chemical being handled in the workplace. Regarding filter characteristics, contact your respiratory protection supplier.

Hand protection : Suitable, heavy duty, plastic or rubber gauntlets should be worn: (Fluorinated or nitrile rubber types recommended;  Regarding glove's breakthrough time,contact your chemical protective glove supplier.

Eye protection : Face shield or safety goggles.

Skin protection : Wear impervious overalls in circumstances where significant skin contact can occur.

Hygiene measures : Exercise good industrial hygiene practice. Wash after handling, especially before eating, drinking or smoking. Remove contaminated clothing immediately.

Environmental exposure controls :

Use of air emission abatement equipment such as incinerators

Treatment of effluent in biological waste water treatment plant.

Stability : Stable under normal usage conditions.

Conditions to avoid : None established.

Materials to avoid : Reaction with water or even atmospheric moisture will produce large amounts of

hydrogen chloride vapour. Hydrogen is liberated on contact with water, alcohols, acidic

or basic materials, many metals or metallic compounds and can form explosive mixtures

in air.

Disposal considerations

Product disposal : Unhydrolysed material must be hydrolysed with excess water and the acid produced neutralised with weak alkali. After hydrolysis, the residue can be disposed of in accordance with local regulations. According to the European Waste Catalogue, Waste Codes are not product specific, but application specific. Waste codes should be assigned by the user, preferably in discussion with the waste disposal authorities.
