Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no adverse effect observed (not sensitising)
Additional information:

The relatively low lipid solubility of Zr metal limits absorption through the skin. Soluble forms of Zr are more readily absorbed since the metal ion is the entity absorbed. Based on the animal and human data available, a read across with ZrO2 data is possible as both insoluble and active forms did not induce any sensitizing response.

A reliable study (Klimisch 2) is available and tested the sensitization potential of ZrO2, substance with the same behaviour as Zr: no effects were observed in this test. This result is confirmed by the observations made on humans exposed to several doses of ZrO2, with no skin reaction observed.

Migrated from Short description of key information:
No data is available on the sensitisation of Zirconium metal. Based on the same toxicity, a read across with ZrO2 was performed. The substance is not a skin sensitisation substance.
