Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

No data are available on the toxicity of hexyl salicylate to soil macroorganisms.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

This data point has been waived for hexyl salicylate on the grounds that exposure is not expected to occur. A study by Simonich et al (2000) demonstrated that hexyl salicylate removal is highly efficient during wastewater treatment (98.7 – 99.8% following primary and secondary removal, depending on the type of treatment), and consequently exposure to soil (i.e. via spreading of sludge) will be negligible. Furthermore, hexyl salicylate is readily biodegradable and therefore non-persistent in the environment. Resulting degradation products show low log Kow values and low anticipated ecotoxicity, and the equilibrium partitioning method is therefore considered sufficiently conservative for risk assessment. Under these circumstances, data for the effects of hexyl salicylate on soil macroorganisms are considered unnecessary.
