Description of key information

In the Fujiki test, approximately 65% of the nitromethane was photodegraded within 24 hours upon exposure to fluorescent light,  lamda 300 and 360 nm.

Gas phase photodegradation, the Fujiki test, was used to measure the photodegradation of nitromethane. Approximately 65% of the test material was photodegraded within 24 hours upon exposure to fluorescent light, lamda 300 and 360 nm.

Photodegradation was measured by exposing silica gel coated with the test material to the light of a mercury vapor lamp. The tested nitroparaffins, which included nitromethane, were degraded readily. Since the tests last only 17 hours, all nitroparaffins have to be considered as readily photodegradable.

The half life for reaction with hydroxyl radicals in the atmosphere was calculated to be 82.3 days in the EPIWIN AOP Program (v1.91) program.
