No significant gas generation was observed over the initial 7 hour test period. Slow gas generation was observed to start after approximately 10 hours and a pale yellow solid formed at the bottom of the flask. The maximum rate of gas generation (0.87 l.kg-1.h-1) was observed in Run 2 approximately 20 hours after adding the water. The generated gas was not tested for flammability (anticipated to be carbon dioxide – non-flammable).

The test is designed to determine the ability of a solid or liquid to ignite on contact with air.

The test is conducted in accordance with EC 440/2008 incorporating EC’s “Classification,

Packaging & Labelling of Dangerous Substances in the European Union” Part 2, Testing

methods, Jan ’97. Directive 92/69, Annex V to Council Directive 67/548/EC.

Test Procedure:

Solids

1-2 ml of the powdery substance to be tested is poured from a height of 1 metre onto a

non-combustible surface and it is observed whether the substance ignites during dropping

or within 5 minutes of settling. The test is performed six times unless a positive result is

obtained earlier.

Liquids

Two separate tests are conducted. The first involves filling a porcelain cup of about

100 mm diameter with diatomaceous earth or silica gel to a height of 5 mm. 5 ml of the

substance to be tested is added and it is observed if the substance ignites within

5 minutes. The test is performed six times unless a positive result is obtained earlier. If the

result is negative then the second test is conducted. This involves placing 0.5 ml of the

substance in the centre of a dry filter paper. It is observed if ignition or charring occurs

within five minutes. The test is performed three times unless a positive result is obtained

earlier.

If the sample ignites in any one of the tests, the material should be considered pyrophoric.
