Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

For anthracene oil itself, no data on biodegradation in water (screening tests) is available. The substance is poorly water soluble consisting of a wide range of polycyclic aromatic substances. The known characteristics and the complexity of the substance preclude performance of standard biodegradation screening tests.

As a substitute, biodegradation characteristics of individual PAH comprising anthracene oil can be used. For some of them (two- and three-ring PAH), there is evidence that they are at least inherently biodegradable. This information results mostly from non-standard biodegradation studies, as results of some of the standard tests are not consistent.

Taking into account that also recalcitrant PAH are present in anthracene oil, the substance as such has to be assessed to resist ready biodegradation.
