The mean score both erythema and oedema was 3.6, with slightly higher
scores reported for abraded skin.
In this guideline-comparable study, 0.5 mL acrylonitrile was applied for
24 hours under occlusive conditions to the shorn (intact and abraded)
dorsal skin of six New Zealand White rabbits. Dermal reactions were
assessed at 24 and 72 hours following application and mean scores (24
and 72 hour) scores (on a scale of 0 to 4) for both erythema and oedema
are reported. The mean score for both erythema and oedema was 3.6, with
slightly higher scores reported for abraded skin. This study that
acrylonitrile is a skin irritant and should be classified as such.
