Description of key information

The solubility of Zr depends on the chemistry of the medium which will lead to chemical reactions (hydrolysis, complexation), in particular the pH value and the species present in the solution (see speciation information in section 5.1).
A Transformation/Dissolution conducted following OECD guideline 29 gives a water solubility of zirconium < 0,05 mg/L

Several independent sources of information indicate that zirconium is insoluble and very stable in water.

The solubility of Zr depends on the chemical reactions (hydrolysis, complexation) occurring in the environment which are mainly influenced by the pH and the species present in the solution.

A Transformation/Dissolution was conducted following OECD guideline 29 ( Guidance Document on Transformation/Dissolution of Metals and Metal Compounds in Aqueous Media)

The preliminary test indicates a no solubility of the test item at pH 6, pH 8 and at pH 2 buffer (< 0.05mg/L which is the detection limit)

As pH has a significant influence on transformation/dissolution the full test should in principle be carried out at a pH that maximises the concentration of the dissolved metal ions in solution. With reference to the conditions generally found in the environment, a pH of 6 was chosen to carry out the confirmation test.

The confirmation test carried out at pH 6 over a period of 7 days shows that the test item does not give any dissolved Zr metal ion above the detection limit.

The long term transformation/dissolution endpoint (obtained during a 28 days transformation/dissolution test, using a single load of 1 mg/L) was not performed, according to the 7 days test results, this test was not considered as relevant, regarding the poor solubility with a 100mg/L loading.
