Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Data on the physical and chemical properties of members of the Other Petroleum Gases category were obtained from proprietary data, peer reviewed handbooks or QSARs which are deemed reliable for use.

The majority of data available were for susbtances which are representative of the composition of the streams included in this category, including methane, ethane, ethylene, propane, propene, butane, isobutane, butene isomers and buta-1,3 -diene. As these substances have a similar structure to the streams, they can be predicted to have similar properties and environmental fate and so the data have been read across to the category members for which data were not available.

The substances in the category present a boiling point of -161.48°C to 3.71°C, a density of 0.423 g/cm3 to 0.62 g/cm3, a vaopur pressure of 212.4kPa to 4.45E+8 kPa at 20 to 25°C, a partition coefficient of 1.09 to 3.39, a water solubility of 24.4 mg/L to 735 mg/L at 25°C (for streams that do not contain 1,3 -butadiene, the water solubility of the substances in the category ranges from 24.4 mg/L to 263 mg/L at 25°C), an autoflammability temperature of 287°C to 537°C and flammability limits of 1.8 % to 36%. This data would result in a classification of the Other Petroleum Gases as category 1 flammable gas and the hazard statement 'extremely flammable gas'.
