Biodegradation in water: screening tests

In a CO2 evolution test according to OECD 301 C and EU method C.4-C (440/2008) compliant to GLP (reliability category 1) the test item failed the requirements for ready biodgradability. However, some biodegradation was observed: Biodegradation at the end of the test period (28 days) in the duplicate flasks was 20% and 33% (27% mean). This result points to a potential for inherent biodegradability. In the toxicity control, no inibition of the test item on microbial activity was observed at a concentration of 17 mg/L.

The test was performed with TTP, the organic phosphite ligand of the submission substance Ni(TTP)4, as the nickel complex is not stable in water and a potential for biodegradation is restricted to the oranic part of the complex.
