Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Additional information

The pigment is not expected to biodegrade and this assumption is supported by several studies.

(1) In a test on the structural analogue (CAS 7023 -61 -2) following OECD guideline 301B the ready biodegradability of the substance was tested. Based on the CO2 evolution a degradation rate of 0 % was determined after 28 days inoculation time (BASF SE, 2007).

(2) In a test on an analogue (CAS 5281 -04 -9) following OECD guideline 301C the substance was inoculated with a mixture of sewage, soil and natural water and the O2 consumption during 28 days inoculation time was recorded. Overall the substance was degraded by 9 -12 % after 28 days (JETOC, 1992).

(3) The third study (on CAS 73612 -29 -0) was conducted according to OECD 301C with a mixture of sewage, soil and natural water as inoculum. The degradation rate after 28 days was 0 % based on O2 consumption of the inoculum (Dainippon Ink and Chemicals Inc., 2006).

(4) The fourth test on CAS 5160 -02 -1 revealed a degradation of 0% based on oxygen consumption.

In conclusion, the present substance is regarded to be not biodegradable and thus persistent in the environment.
