Description of key information

A static salt sediment long term toxicity test of NExBTL renewable diesel (a UVCB substance of similar composition to the substance) was performed according to OSPAR Protocols on Methods for the Testing of Chemicals used in The Offshore Industry, Part A: A Sediment Bioassay using an Amphipod Corophium sp., Oslo and Paris Commission 2005, with slight modifications.

The test organisms, adult estuarine amphipods (Corophium volutator), were collected from a wild population. The test water was filtered natural sea water and the sediment a silty sand sediment collected from the same location as the test organisms. It was sieved (500 µm mesh) and homogenized thoroughly prior to the test. The sediment was spiked with the test material (control and nominal concentrations of 1.2, 3.7, 12, 37, 117, and 1165 mg/kg dry weight) with exposures conducted in triplicate (10 organisms per test vessel). At the end of the 10-day test, mortality in each test vessel was determined and the median lethal concentration (LC50) was defined. The LC50 value was 1200 mg/kg dry weight (d.w.) with 95% confidence intervals of 800 - 3700 mg/kg d.w. The reported No Observed Effect Concentration (NOEC) was 373 mg/kg d.w. and the Lowest Observed Effect Concentration (LOEC) was 1165 mg/kg d.w.

According to The Offshore Chemical Notification Scheme (OCNS), which classifies chemicals using test protocols approved by the Oslo and Paris Commissions (OSPAR), NExBTL renewable diesel belongs to a group with the least environmental hazard potential because the LC50 (Corophium volutator) falls into the range 1000 – 10 000 ppm and the material is readily biodegradable.

Results from this investigation along with data supporting ready biodegrability indicate that NExBTL renewable diesel does not present a hazard to sediment organisms.
