In the Grewer oven the test item showed a self-ignition temperature of 170 °C (see Key study reported under 'Auto flammability' endpoint.

Following this screening test an additional test has been performed to investigate the self heating properties of the substance:

The test in the 1 L wire basket at 140 °C showed a self-ignition of the test item with a temperature increase of 230 °C above storage temperature within 24 hours.

The test in the 15.625 mL wire basket at 140 °C showed no self-ignition of the test item within 24 hours.

The test in the 1 L wire basket at 120 °C showed no self-ignition of the test item within 24 hours.

Conclusions:
According to the results of the tests on the self-ignition in the Bowes-Cameron-Cage Test (UN-Test N.4) the test item is classified as follows under the UN Transport Regulation: The test item does not have to be classified as self-heating substance in class 4, division 4.2 according to the UN Transport Regulation, if the test item ishandled in containerswith a volume of ≤ 3 m³.
If the test item is handled in containers > 3 m³ it is classified as self-heating substance in class 4, division 4.2 and assigned to packing group III.

GHS / CLP Regulation EC 1272/2008 Annex 1: 2.11: The test item does not have to be classified as self-heating substance according to GHS/CLP Regulation EC 1272/2008 Annex 1: 2.11, respectively, if the test item is handled in containers with a volume of< 3 m³. If the test item is handled in containers > 3 m³, it must be classified as a self-heating substance and assigned to category 2.
Executive summary:

In the Grewer oven the test item showed a self-ignition temperature of 170 °C. Therefore, self-heating properties of the test item were determined according to UN Test N.4 by Bowes-Cameron-Cage test.

In the investigation of self-heating in the Grewer Oven for the pure test item, a first exothermic effect was detected starting at 170 °C, which led to a maximum temperature of 300 °C and a second exothermic effect starting at 250 °C, which led to a maximum temperature of 460 °C. After the measurement a black residue remained in the basket.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
The pure test item indicated a self-heating at atmospheric pressure starting at a temperature of approx. 170 °C, which led to a maximum temperature of 460 °C. Based on this preliminary test, additional studies to assess the self-heating properties have been evaluated (see end point flammability-self heating)
Executive summary:

The objective of this study was the determination of the relative self-ignition temperature of the test item according to VDI 2263, sheet 1 and UN Class 4, Division 4.2. The pure test item indicated a self-heating at atmospheric pressure starting at a temperature of approx. 170 °C, which led to a maximum temperature of 460 °C.

Additional testing has been performed (see end point flammability- self heating) which confirmed that the substance does not have to be classified as self heating substance according to the CLP classification.
