- Interpretation of results:
- Category 4 (combustible liquids) based on GHS criteria
- Conclusions:
- The corrected flash point of test item (E,Z)-2,6-DIMETHYLOCTA-2,4,6-TRIENE was determined to be 70.0°C at 101.3 kPa (lowest value of two independent determinations). Therefore, (E,Z)-2,6-DIMETHYLOCTA-2,4,6-TRIENE is not classified as flammable according to CLP regulation (EC) No 1272/2008. No signal word or hazard statement is required. The substance is classified as flammable category 4 (H227) according to GHS Regulation.
- Executive summary:
A study was performed to determine the flash point of test item (E,Z)-2,6-DIMETHYLOCTA-2,4,6-TRIENE. The method followed was designed to be compliant with the Method A.9 of Commission Regulation No. 440/2008, ''Flash Point''.
The flash point of the test item is determined with a closed cup tester, by an equilibrium method called "Small Scale", (commonly known as Setaflash).
The substance is placed into a test cup and heated using a temperature gradient program. Ignition trials are carried out in order to ascertain whether or not the sample flashes at the temperature tested.
A pre-test followed by four determinations were conducted. For the pre-test, a flash point of 70.0°C was observed. This data was used to select the range of temperatures for the following determinations.
Determinations 1 and 4 respectively gave a corrected flash point of 71.0°C and 70.0°C at 101.3kPa.
Moreover the flash point of the reference substances glycerol and CRM respects the checking cards limits.
The corrected flash point of the test item was determined to be 70.0°C at 101.3 kPa (lowest value of two independent determinations).

Results:
Pre-test:
The flash point of the test item was estimated at 70.0°C during the pre-test.
First determination:
The flash point of the test item was estimated at 70.0°C during the first determination.
An automatic correction was applied to the obtained result because the ambient pressure was not 101.3 kPa but 98.2 kPa.
With this correction, the flash point value is 71.0°C at 101.3 kPa.
Second determination:
The flash point was detected at 72.0°C and the same automatic correction was applied because the ambient pressure was still 98.2 kPa.
With this correction, the flash point value is 73°C at 101.3 kPa.
As the two first determinations do not meet the validation criteria (no more than 1°C of difference), a new determination is perfomed.
Third determination:
The flash point was detected at 65.0°C and the same automatic correction was applied because the ambient pressure was still 98.2 kPa.
With this correction, the flash point value is 66.0°C at 101.3 kPa.
However it was revealed that a wrong cleaning of the cup was performed at the end of the second determination and affects the result of the third determination. For this reason, resultts of this determination are not considered for this study.
Fourth determination:
The flash point was detected at 69.0°C and the same automatic correction was applied because the ambient pressure was still 98.2 kPa.
With this correction, the flash point value is 70.0°C at 101.3 kPa.
Description of key information
The flash point was determined with a closed cup tester by Setaflash method.
The flash point of (E,Z)-2,6-DIMETHYLOCTA-2,4,6-TRIENE is 70°C.
The substance is not classified as flammable according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP) criteria.
The substance is classified as flammable category 4 (H227) according to GHS Regulation.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Flash point at 101 325 Pa:
- 70 °C
Additional information
The flash point of neryl acetate was determined in a study performed according to EU method A.9.
As the results were obtained under GLP without deviation, they were considered as valid and reliable without restriction and used as key value.
