Description of key information
Appearance:
On the basis of physical observation and using the sense of smell, tributylmethylammonium chloride was observed to be a clear light yellow colour viscous liquid.
Melting point:
Freezing point of chemical Tributylmethylammonium chloride was determine to be less than -11.3 Deg C.
Boiling Point:
The boiling point determination of Test item Tributylmethylammonium chloride (CAS No.56375-79-2 ) was done as per the test guideline OECD 103. The method followed was according to Siwoloboff. The boiling point was determine to be 131.9°C at 964.6 hPa.
Density:
The density of Test item Tributylmethylammonium chloride (CAS No. 56375-79-2 ) was determined following OECD guideline 109 and according to the Indian standard method for determination of density of liquids [IS 4730:1994 (Reaffirmed 2010)]. The mean density of the test item was determine to be 0.9728 g/cm³ at 20°C and 964.35 hPa.
Particle size distribution:
The study does not need to be conducted because the substance is marketed or used in a non solid or granular form. On the basis of physical observation and using the sense of smell, tributylmethylammonium chloride was observed to be a clear light yellow colour viscous liquid.
Vapour pressure:
The estimated vapour pressure of Tributylmethylammonium chloride (CAS No. 56375-79-2 ) at 25deg C was 6.959E-6 Pa.
Partition coefficient:
The partition Coefficient n-octanol/water of Tributylmethylammonium chloride(CAS No.56375-79-2) at 25 °C was estimated according to the OECD Guideline No. 107, adopted on 27th July 1995,”Shake Flask Method” Shake-flask Method. The Solubility of Tributylmethylammonium chloride(CAS No.56375-79-2) was determined in-house and it was found to be 535.143 g/L. For the Pow estimation, the different volumes of a stock solution (noctanol pre saturated with water) were shaken with different volume of water pre saturated with n-octanol. After separation, both the water phase and octanol phase were analysed by HPLC. The partition coefficient were calculated, from the measured concentration of Tributylmethylammonium chloride(CAS No.56375-79-2) in the octanol and water phases. The log Pow value was determine to be -0.842 ± 0.022 at 25 °C.
By considering this log Pow value it can be concluded that Tributylmethylammonium chloride is hydrophilic in nature and it is also supported by high water solubility of test chemical in water.
Water solubility:
The estimated water solubility of Tributylmethylammonium chloride (CAS No. 56375-79-2 ) at 25 deg C was 17700 mg/l.
Based on the estimated value, Tributylmethylammonium chloride (CAS No. 56375-79-2 ) was very soluble in water.
Surface tension:
Based on the data from ACD labs, surface tension for Tributylmethylammonium chloride was predicted to be 27.6 mN/m.
Flash point:
The flash point determination of Test item Tributylmethylammonium chloride (CAS No. 56375-79-2 )was done. The method was closed cup method using Pensky-Martens Flash Point Apparatus. The flash point of the test item was determine to be 191.3°C at 963.3 hPa.
Auto flammability:
Tributylmethylammonium chloride did not catch fire on being exposed to air at room temperature of 27°C pressure of 966 hPa. This indicates that Tributylmethylammonium chloride is not auto-flammable.
Flammability:
Tributylmethylammonium chloride does not indicate any ignition when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of approximately 950°C is brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that Tributylmethylammonium chloride is not flammable at high temperature. However since such high temperatures are not found under normal circumstances of transportation and use, thus Tributylmethylammonium chloride was considered non-flammable.
Explosiveness:
The study does not need to be conducted because there are no chemical groups present in the molecule which are associated with explosive properties.
Oxidizing properties:
The study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a liquid.
Stability in organic solvents and identity of relevant degradation products:
The study does not need to be conducted because the stability of the substance is not considered to be critical.
pH:
The pH determination of test item Tributylmethylammonium chloride (CAS No. 56375-79-2 ) was done as per the test guideline OECD 122. The mean pH of the test emulsionwas determined with the help of digital pH meter. The mean pH was determine to be 4.70 at 25 °C.
Dissociation constant:
The study does not need to be conducted because the analytical method is not sensitive enough.
Viscosity:
Kinematic viscosity (experimental) of Tributylmethylammonium chloride (CAS No. 56375-79-2) at 20°C and 40°C is 180.8040 mm²/sec and 46.9300 mm²/s,respectively.
Dynamic viscosity (calculated) of Tributylmethylammonium chloride (CAS No. 56375-79-2) at 20°C and 40°C is 175.8861mPa.S and 45.6535mPa.S, respectively.
