Description of key information

Acute toxicity data are available on three trophic groups:

- fish: the 96h-LC50 for Gobiocypris rarus exposed to 1,4 diiodoperfluorobutane was 0.192 mg/L based on estimated exposure concentrations;

- crustacean: the 48h-EC50 for Daphnia magna exposed to 1,4 diiodoperfluorobutane was 0.75 mg/L based on measured exposure concentrations;

- algae: the 72h-ErC50 for Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata exposed to 1,4 diiodoperfluorobutane was 0.39 mg/L based on mesured exposure concentrations.

For technical reasons, it was not possible to determine with precision the 96h-LC50 value during the acute fish toxicity study. The measured concentrations of 1,4 diiodoperfluorobutane for all the treatment groups were below the limit of detection (LOD = 0.540 mg/L) and the 96h-LC50 value was therefore estimated based on measured concentrations in the stock solution (estimated 96h-LC50 0.192 mg/L). Alternatively, the 96h-LC50 could also have been reported as < LOD/2, i.e. < 0.270 mg/L.

Experimental data support the conclusion that 1,4 diiodoperfluorobutane is very toxic to aquatic life and fish appears as being the most sensitive species to 1,4 diiodoperfluorobutane. As it was not possible to determine with precision the 96h-LC50 for fish, a safety factor of 10 is applied, for the assessment, to the estimated value of 0.192 mg/L, which means that a 96h-LC50 value of 0.0192 mg/L was used, as a worst-case, for environmental hazard assessment.
