Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Type of information:
read-across from supporting substance (structural analogue or surrogate)
Adequacy of study:
key study
Justification for type of information:
For details and justification of read-across please refer to the read-across report attached to IUCLID section 13.
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:

Key result
Surface tension:
70.7 mN/m
Temp.:
20 °C
Conc.:
1 g/L
Conclusions:
In conclusion, it can be stated that under the conditions decribed 1 g/L of lactic acid 93% has a surface tension value at 20°C of 70.7 mN/m. Therefore, lactic acid 93% aq is considered not be surface active.
Executive summary:

The OECD harmonized ring method (OECD TG 115) was used for the determination of the surface tension of Lactic acid 93% aq. The surface tension of a test solution at a concentration of 1 g/L and at 20 °C was 70.7 mN/m. According to this, the test substance is considered as not surface active.

This information is used in a read-across approach in the assessment of the target substance. For justification of read-across please refer to the attached read-across report (see IUCLID section 13).

Endpoint:
surface tension
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because surface activity is not a desired property of the material

Description of key information

DD-lactide undergoes rapid hydrolysis, forming lactic acid. Lactic acid is not surface active, with a surface tension of 70.7 mN/m as shown in a GLP study conducted in accordance to OECD TG 115. In addition and in accordance with REACH Regulation 1907/2006 Annex VII, section 7.6 a study with the target substance does not need to be conducted as surface activity is not a desired property.

Key value for chemical safety assessment
