Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Weight of evidence based on four peer-reviewed data from handbooks (83, 83, 83.4 and 83-87 deg C).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Boiling point at 101 325 Pa:
356 K

Additional information

Three determinations indicate a boiling point, one a boiling range. As detailed information on purity is not provided in the handbooks it is concluded that the boiling range results from a less pure substance. The boiling point is therefore concluded to be the mean of the three boiling point values.

In addition, in a supporting study it was indicated that mixtures of nitric acid and water, when boiled, undergo such a change that the weak mixtures lose water, and the strong mixtures lose acid, until the residual liquid attains a specific gravity of 1.42, and boils, under the ordinary atmospheric pressure, steadily at 120°C (Roscoe, 1861).
