Phthalic anhydride has been identified, but not quantified, in US drinking water. US EPA states that this observation is presumably an artefact (see Remark). US EPA concluded that the rapid hydrolysis of phthalic anhydride to phthalic acid that occurs in aqueous media, would preclude any significant transport of the chemical in the aquatic environment
