Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

In a limit test no significant inhibition of micro-organisms was observed at 100 mg/L. As such, the NOEC was determined to be 100 mg/L and the EC50 was determined to be >100 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for microorganisms:
100 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
100 mg/L

Additional information

A 3 -hour activated sludge respiration inhibition test was conducted for barium diboron tetraoxide. The test was carried out according to OECD guideline 209. Activated sludge from a domestic wastewater treatment plant was exposed to the test substance at a concentration of 100 mg/L. Six controls (tap water, synthetic sewage and inoculum, but without addition of test item) were tested in parallel. 3,5 -dichlorophenol was used as a reference substance.

The respiration rates of the activated sludge treated with the test item at a concentration of 100 mg/L differed by less than 10% from control. Therefore Barium diboron tetraoxide at a concentration of 100 mg/L had no toxic effects on respiration activity of activated sludge. The NOEC s established to be100 mg/L and the EC50 was established to be >100 mg/L.
