According to REACH Regulation (Annex IX, column II), the study on
terrestrial toxicity does not to be done if a direct or indirect
exposure is not to be expected. According to the available data an
exposure can be excluded. According to REACH Regulation (Annex XI, 1.),
a study does not need to be done if based on the available data the risk
of the substance can be assessed. Based on the available data, a high
soil sorption onto soil organic matter is to be expected (Koc=690).
Alpha-methylstyrene is assumed to be rapidly biodegradable. In soil a
higher density of microorganisms is to be expected and thus more
favorite conditions for degradation can be assumed. Furthermore,
according to Mackay Level I the target compartment of the distribution
is air (98%) and there is evidence of low toxicity to sewage microbes,
Pseudomonas and microfungi (section 6.1.7).
