No data from guideline studies on soil toxicity are available. According to REACH Regulation (Annex IX, column II), the study on terrestrial toxicity does not to be done if a direct or indirect exposure is not to be expected. According to the available data an exposure can be excluded. According to REACH Regulation (Annex XI, 1.), a study does not need to be done if based on the available data the risk of the substance can be assessed. Based on the available data, a high soil sorption onto soil organic matter is to be expected (Koc=690). Alpha-methylstyrene is assumed to be rapidly biodegradable.

In soil a higher density of microorganisms is to be expected and thus more favorite conditions for degradation can be assumed. Furthermore, according to Mackay Level I the target compartment of the distribution is air (98%) and there is evidence of low toxicity to sewage microbes, Pseudomonas and microfungi (section 6.1.7). Therefore, testing of terrestrial organisms is not regarded necessary. According to the TGD, in the absence of sediment data the equilibrium partitioning method can be used for assessing the hazard to terrestrial organisms.
