According to REACH Regulation (Annex XI, column II), the toxicity testing of sediment dwelling organisms can be proposed if based on the available data the need is indicated. According to REACH Regulation (Annex XI, 1.), a study does not need to be done if based on the available data the risk of the substance can be assessed. Based on the available data, a high sorption onto sediment organic matter is to be expected (Koc=690). Alpha-methylstyrene is assumed to be rapidly biodegradable.

In the sediment a higher density of microorganisms is to be expected and thus more favorite conditions for degradation can be assumed. Furthermore, according to Mackay Level I the target compartment of the distribution is air (98%). Therefore, testing of sediment organisms is not regarded necessary. According to the TGD, in the absence of sediment data the equilibrium partitioning method can be used for assessing the hazard to sediment organisms.
