Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
bioaccumulation in aquatic species: fish
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Remarks:
validity criteria and details on results were not available, the study was performed according to OECD Guidelines and was generated by the Japanese Competent Authorities.
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 305 C (Bioaccumulation: Test for the Degree of Bioconcentration in Fish)
Deviations:
not specified
Principles of method if other than guideline:
A bioconcentration test (May 1981) carried out on Carp (Cyprinus carpio)
GLP compliance:
not specified
Radiolabelling:
no
Details on sampling:
Sampling intervals / frequency for test organisms: every 2 weeks
Sampling intervals / frequency for test medium samples: twice a week
Test organisms (species):
Cyprinus carpio
Details on test organisms:
Number of organisms per vessel: 15-20 fishes
Source: Sugishima fish farm (Kumamoto 866, Japan)
Length at study initiation: about 10 cm
Age at study initiation: no data
Weight at study initiation: about 30g
Feed during test: yes
Food type: pelleted feed for carp
Test type:
flow-through
Hardness:
no data
Test temperature:
25+/-2°C
pH:
7
Dissolved oxygen:
6-8 mg/l
Nominal and measured concentrations:
0.2ppm and 0.02ppm
Lipid content:
4.5 %
Remarks on result:
other: average
Conc. / dose:
200 µg/L
Type:
BCF
Value:
> 3 - < 14 dimensionless
Conc. / dose:
20 µg/L
Type:
BCF
Value:
ca. 3.1 - < 15 dimensionless
Details on results:
Test concentration: 0.2ppm
BCF: (3.0)-14

Test concentration: 0.02ppm
BCF: <3.1 - (15)

BCF results of <=15 indicate low potential for bioaccumulation. Using the Bcfwin (v2.7) model (based upon a study prepared for US EPA (Meylan et al., 1997)) with a measured log Kow value of 1.55, one obtains a predicted BCF value of 3.1 for 4,4'-MDA. This predicted BCF value is consistent with the experimental values obtained in the study.

Description of key information

BCF values ranging from <3.1 to 15 were found for Cyprinus carpio after 42 days exposure. The test was performed according to OECD 305C.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

In an experimental study according to OECD 305 the bioaccumulative potential of the test istem was assessed in Cyprinus carpio. The test species was exposed to 200 µg/L and 20 µg/L over 42 d. No potential for bioaccumulation was observed with BCF values of 3-14 (200µg/L) and 3-15 (20 µg/L).
