The toxicity of Triclosan to birds was tested in two studies on acute oral toxicity and in one study on dietary toxicity. The acute oral toxicity was tested according to EPA guideline OPP 71-1 with Anas platyrhynchos and Colinus virginianus respectively as test organisms. Test animals received Triclosan on day 1 of the text period and were monitored for 13 consecutive days. The NOEC based on mortality determined in C. virginianus was < 147 mg/kg bw (LC50: 862 mg/kg bw). In A. platyrhynchos a NOEC >2150 mg/kg bw (LC50 >2150 mg/kg bw) was detected. The short-term dietary toxicity study was conducted in compliance with EPA OPP 71-2. Colinus virginianus were fed 5 days with Triclosan followed by a 3 day recovery period. Reduced feed consumption and decreased body weight were observed at a test substance concentration of 5000 mg/kg. Two of the animals of the test group 5000 mg/l that died during the test had gaseous intestines. The determined NOEC was 1250 mg/kg diet, the LC50 was > 5000 mg/kg diet (Ciba-Geigy 1993).
