Additional information

No studies are available for C12-16 AO, however studies are available for two other members of the category – C12-14 AO and C12-18 AO. As these substances cover the chain length range of C12-16 AO it is considered appropriate to read across the values of water solubility obtained in the available studies to C12-16 AO.

In the key study on the C12 -14 amine oxide [Lammens M & Rottiers A (2002)] a saturated aqueous solution, based on visual observation, was prepared by mixing 10 g of lyophilised test substance with 15 mL of deionised water. This mixture was stirred for 24 hours at room temperature followed by centrifugation at 2500 rpm to separate undissolved solids from the aqueous phase. The concentration of the substance dissolved in the aqueous phase was analysed using a simplified DBAS method. The water solubility of the substance was 409.5 g/L. No information is given in the report on stability of the lyophilised substance, but the result is in line with actual concentrations of amine oxide achieved during routine manufacturing and is considered to be reliable.

In the key study on C12 -18 amine oxide the water solubility was measured using EC Test Method A6. A water solubility of 313.2 g/L was obtained, but the samples gelled on standing and could not be equilibrated at room temperature prior to analysis. The value is considered to be valid, as C12 -18 AO is produced commercially as a 30 % w/v solution in water.

The solubility of C12 -16 amine oxide is therefore considered to be in the range of 313.2 - 409.5 g/L.
