Applicant's summary and conclusion

Interpretation of results:
study cannot be used for classification
Conclusions:
Instillation of 2,2'-bipyridine into rabbit eyes resulted in moderate initial pain followed by infection and chemosis of the conjunctivae. Effects were reversible within 5 days.
Executive summary:

Eye irritating properties of 2,2’-bipyridine were tested in an in vivo test according to the method of Draize (1959). Briefly, one drop of a solution of the test item in saline was applied into the conjunctival sac of the right eye of three albino rabbits, the left eye serving as untreated control. There was no information on GLP nor were closer information on the scoring system or the amount of test item applied into the eyes available.

Instillation of 2,2'-bipyridine into rabbit eyes resulted in moderate initial pain followed by some infection and chemosis of the conjunctivae which was reversible within 5 days.
