Endpoint:
pyrophoric liquids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.13 (Pyrophoric Properties of Solids and Liquids)
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Test procedure:
ignition time on contact with air
Remarks on result:
no ignition within 5 minutes
Test procedure:
effect on filter paper
Remarks on result:
no ignition within 5 minutes
Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The test item is not pyrophoric.
Executive summary:

The test item was tested for its pyrophoric properties in the sense European Commission Regulation (EC) No. 440/2008, Method A.13.

A porcelain cup of approx. 10 cm diameter was filled with diatomaceous earth (kieselguhr) to a height of about 5 mm. Approx. 5 ml of the liquid to be tested were poured into the prepared porcelain cup and it was observed whether the substance ignites within five minutes. If no ignition occurs in six tests, the following tests are performed:

0.5 ml of the test sample was delivered from a syringe to an indented dry filter paper and it was observed whether ignition or charring of the filter paper occured within five minutes of the liquid being added. The test was performed three times unless ignition or charring occured.

Within six tests no ignition was observed when the test item was poured on kieselguhr. In neither of three tests an ignition or charring was observed when the test item was delivered onto filter paper. Thus, the test item has no pyrophoric properties.

Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the organic substance does not contain metals or metalloids and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
Endpoint:
flammable liquids: obsolete as covered by section 'Flash point'
Data waiving:
study technically not feasible
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a liquid
Endpoint:
self-heating substances / mixtures
Data waiving:
study technically not feasible
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a liquid

Description of key information

Flammability: As the test item is liquid the flammability is covered by the flash point

Pyrophoric properties: According to EC test method A.13 the test item has no pyrophoric properties.

Contact with water: As the test item does not contain metals or metalloids, the classification procedure does not need to be applied.

Self-heating: As the test item is a liquid the test does not need to be conducted.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified
