Description of key information

In a skin irritating study conducted using a protocol comparable to OECD 404 and to GLP (Huntingdon Research Centre Ltd., 1988a) triethoxyisobutylsilane was mildly irritaing to the skin of rabbits, but this irritation did not meet the criteria for classification.
In an eye irritation study conducted using a protocol comparable to OECD 405 and to GLP (Huntingdon Research Centre Ltd., 1988b) triethoxyisobutylsilane was not irritating to the eyes of rabbits.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin irritation / corrosion

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (irritating)

Eye irritation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no adverse effect observed (not irritating)

Respiratory irritation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no adverse effect observed (not irritating)

Additional information

There is a reliable study available for each of skin and eye irritation. There were very minor, isolated signs of respiratory tract irritation in the acute and repeated dose toxicity studies, but these do not meet the criteria for classification. However, the substance was previously classified as R38; Skin Irrit. 2 in Annex VI of Regulation 1272/2008/EC, and this is upheld.

Effects on skin irritation/corrosion: irritating

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the available skin and eye irritation studies in rabbits, triethoxyisobutylsilane is not classified for skin, eye or respiratory tract irritation according to Regulation 1272/2008/EC. However, the substance was previously classified as R38; Skin Irrit. 2 in Annex VI of Regulation 1272/2008/EC, and this is upheld.
