Description of key information

The half-life for nitroethane for reaction with hydroxyl radicals was estimated using the EPIWIN AOP program. In the Fujiki test approximately 76% of the test material was photodegraded within 24 hours upon exposure to fluorescent light, lamda 300 and 360 nm.  Nitroethane did not hydrolyze in water.

The phototransformation data for nitroethane was calculated using EPIWIN Aop Program (v1.91).  Inputs to the program are CAS No. 79-24-3 and measured values for melting point (-89.5 degrees C), boiling point (114 degrees C), vapor pressure (.21 mm Hg), partition coefficient (.18) and water solubility (45,000 mg/l).

Photodegradation was measured by exposing silica gel coated with the test material to the light of a mercury vapor lamp. The tested nitroparaffins, which included nitroethane, were degraded readily. Since the tests last only 17 hours, all nitroparaffins have to be considered as readily photodegradable.

 

Gas phase photodegradation, the Fujiki test, was used to measure the photodegradation of nitromethane. Approximately 76% of the test material was photodegraded within 24 hours upon exposure to fluorescent light, lamda 300 and 360 nm.
