Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information

The test item was not readily biodegradable under the conditions of an OECD testing guideline 301F test.


This study was conducted in accordance with procedures outlined in OECD Guideline 301 F (1992). The ready biodegradability of the test item was assessed over an extended 56 days period due to the complex chemical nature (UVCB) of the test substance. The test was conducted at a nominal loading rate of 100 mg/L.


The test item was not readily biodegradable under the conditions of the test as it failed to achieve a transition from 10% to 60% degradation in a 10-day window during the 28 days test.


The test item was not considered to be inhibitory to the microbial inoculum since the biodegradation observed in the toxicity control bioreactor was not less than 25% occurred within 14 days.


In addition, a non-GLP study performed according to OECD 301D testing Guideline using inert carriers and a different inoculum reached a mean biodegradation of 24.5% by Day 28 and 26.5% by Day 84.


In addition, the biodegradation potential of all known main constituents of the test substance was assessed using an in-silico approach, the BOD QSAR Model “LMC OASIS CATALOGIC 301C”. This model also identifies the biotic degradation products of the test substance. The in silico approach was chosen as the most appropriate method to assess the degradation products considering that the parent substance is a complex UVCB consisting of multiple relevant constituents.
