The test substance Triquat Monomer was investigated for its ready biodegradability in a "28-Day DOC Die-Away Test" according to the EEC Directive 92/69, C.4-A (1992), OECD Guideline No. 301 A (1992) and GLP.

In the test flasks, containing the test substance Triquat Monomer and activated sludge (inoculum), 13% of biodegradation was observed (based on the mean decrease of concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC)) within the test period of 28 days. Therefore, Triquat Monomer was not readily biodegradable under the test conditions.

In the abiotic control, containing the test substance and poisoned mineral medium, no elimination was noted after 28 days of exposure (based on DOC measurements).Thus,no abiotic elimination occurred under the test conditions.

The reference substance sodium benzoate was completely (>90%) biodegraded within seven days of exposure, thus confirming thesuitability of the activated sludge.

In the toxicity control, containing the test substance, the reference substance sodium benzoate and activated sludge (inoculum), the initial DOC decreased by 51% within 14 days of exposure. Thus, according to the test guidelines thetest substance was not inhibitory to activated sludge at the tested concentrationof 130 mg/L because degradation was >35% within 14 days.
