First-aid measures

Emergency measure - Inhalation: Remove to fresh air. Treat symptomatically. Get medical
attention if symptoms persist.
Emergency measure - Eyes: Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15
minutes and get medical attention.
Emergency measure - Skin: Immediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15
minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Get
medical attention.
Emergency measure - Ingestion: Give water and get medical attention.

Fire-fighting measures

Recommended extinguishing agent: Use water spray, dry chemical, carbon dioxide or foam. Wear
self-contained breathing apparatus and protective clothing.
Products of combustion may include hydrogen chloride.

Accidental release measures

Emergency measures in case of spillage: Collect with absorbent material and contain for salvage or
disposal. Dispose of only in approved incinerator or
contract with licensed chemical waste disposal agency.

Handling and storage

Handling: Avoid skin/eye contact. Wear impervious gloves,apron or
smock, boots and eye/face protection.

Storage: Store in enclosed system away from oxidising materials.

Disposal considerations

Industry - Possibility of recovery/recycling: Not practical from the reaction liquor after use in the
chemical manufacture indicated under item 2.1 but spillages
may be recovered by collecting the liquid on absorbent
material and containing for eventual salvage or for
disposal as below.

Industry - Possibility of neutralisation: The corrosive properties of this substance are at least
partly associated with its acidic phenolic grouping whose
effects can best be neutralised by treatment with a dilute
alkali such as aqueous sodium carbonate.

Industry - Possibility of destruction: controlled discharge: Not recomended.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - incineration: As is general for chlorinated phenols, a high temperature
and adequate air are required (such that no dioxins are
released) the notifier stated that a temperature of 1800
deg F (980 deg C) and an air ratio of 10% should destroy
the substance but the UK c.a. has indicated that a minimum
temperature of 1200 deg C (approx 2200 deg F) be used.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - water purification: Although there is some indication of a biotic degradation
occurring over an extended period of time, this method is
not recommended.
