Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

First-aid measures

Description of first aid measures: Immediately call a POISON CENTER or doctor/physician.

Immediately remove contaminated clothing. If danger of loss of consciousness, place patient in recovery position and transport accordingly. Apply artificial respiration if necessary. First aid personnel should pay attention to their own safety.

- If inhaled: Remove person to fresh air and keep comfortable for breathing.

- On skin contact: Take off immediately all contaminated clothing. Rinse skin with water/shower.

- On contact with eyes: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing

- On ingestion: Immediately rinse mouth and then drink plenty of water, do not induce vomiting, seek medical attention.

Most important symptoms and effects, both acute and delayed:

- Symptoms: Eye irritation, development of pulmonary edema, vomiting, skin corrosion, irritation of the mucous membranes, irritation to the lungs, coughing, Further symptoms are possible

- Hazards: Danger of irritation to the lungs. Risk of pulmonary edema. These risks can occur also at lower concentrations.

Indication of any immediate medical attention and special treatment needed

- Treatment: Treat according to symptoms (decontamination, vital functions), no known specific antidote, administer corticosteroid dose aerosol to prevent pulmonary edema.

Fire-fighting measures

Extinguishing media

- Suitable extinguishing media: foam, dry lime, cement, Water in copious quantities, Dry sand

Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture

- boron trifluoride, methanol. The substances/groups of substances mentioned can be released in case of fire.

Advice for fire-fighters

- Special protective equipment:  Wear a self-contained breathing apparatus.

Further information:  Containers/tanks should be cooled with water spray. Avoid direct contact with water. Contaminated extinguishing water must be disposed of in accordance with official regulations.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures: Breathing protection required. Ensure adequate ventilation.

Environmental precautions: do not discharge into drains/surface waters/groundwater. Due to the pH-value of the product, neutralization is generally required before discharging sewage into treatment plants.

Methods and material for containment and cleaning up

- For small amounts: dilute with water. Neutralize with lime. Dispose of absorbed material in accordance with regulations.

- For large amounts: dike spillage. Place into suitable container for disposal. Dispose of absorbed material in accordance with regulations.

Handling and storage

Precautions for safe handling: keep container tightly sealed.

Protection against fire and explosion: if exposed to fire, keep containers cool by spraying with water. Sources of ignition should be kept well clear.

Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities

- Suitable materials for containers: High density polyethylene (HDPE)

- Further information on storage conditions: Keep container tightly closed in a cool, well-ventilated place.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Consider the risk management measures as outlined in the exposure scenario

1. Technical protection measures:

The following general risk management measures and operational conditions are suggested for substances in this hazard band:

- Any measure to eliminate exposure should be considered;

- Very high level of containment required, except for short term exposures e.g. taking samples;

- Design closed system to allow for easy maintenance;

- If possible keep equipment under negative pressure;

- Control staff entry to work area;

- Ensure all equipment well maintained;

- Permit to work for maintenance work;

- Regular cleaning of equipment and work area;

- Management/supervision in place to check that the RMMs in place are being used correctly and OCs followed;

2. Organisational protection measures: due to its corrosive properties substances in this category, a very high level of containment, automatic dosing/feeding to the process, and appropriate PPE are recommended in occupational settings in order to avoid exposure. Therefore, the should only be handled by properly trained personnel using personal protection in the form of gloves, respiratory protection and protection goggles.

- Training for staff on good practice;

- Procedures and training for emergency decontamination and disposal;

- Good standard of personal hygiene;

- Recording of any ‘near miss’ situations;

3. Hand protection: Chemical resistant protective gloves (EN 374)

- Suitable materials for short-term contact (recommended: At least protective index 2, corresponding > 30 minutes of permeation time according to EN 374). Butyl rubber (butyl) - 0.7 mm coating thickness

- Supplementary note: The specifications are based on tests, literature data and information of glove manufacturers or are derived from similar substances by analogy. Due to many conditions (e.g. temperature) it must be considered, that the practical usage of a chemical-protective glove in practice may be much shorter than the permeation time determined through testing.

Manufacturer's directions for use should be observed because of great diversity of types.

4. Feet protection: See body protection measures

5. Body protection: Body protection must be chosen depending on activity and possible exposure, e.g. apron, protecting boots, chemical-protection suit (according to EN 14605 in case of splashes or EN ISO 13982 in case of dust).

6. Eye protection: Tightly fitting safety goggles (cage goggles) (e.g. EN 166) and face shield.

7. Respiratory protection:

Suitable respiratory protection for lower concentrations or short-term effect: Gas filter for gases/vapours of inorganic compounds (e.g. EN 14387 Type B)

Suitable respiratory protection for higher concentrations or long-term effect: Self-contained breathing apparatus.
