The hydrolytic half-life of Cycloaliphatic Epoxide Resin ERL-4221 was estimated by the QSAR program to be 324 days at pH 7. This value was not used due to the inability of the QSAR program to use the correct structural fragments in its calculation. On the basis of other work performed on the test substance, it was apparent that hydrolysis proceeded at a much quicker rate. The half-life is thought to be more accurately estimated by use of information from the analytical method development and water solubility studies. The half-life of Cycloaliphatic Epoxide Resin ERL-4221 was estimated to be 21,47 and 42 hours at pHs 4,7 and 9 respectively (method development) and 33 hours at pH 7 (solubility study). Half-life at environmentally relevant conditions, therefore, is likely to be in the range of circa 1-2 days.

A study was conducted to investigate the biodegradation of Cycloaliphatic Epoxide Resin ERL-4221. The study was in accordance with OECD Guideline 301B. The % biodegradation is expressed as a ratio of evolved carbon dioxide to the initial theoretical carbon added as test substance. The initial concentration of the test substance (Cycloaliphatic Epoxide Resin ERL-4221) was 20 mg C L-1. The test substance achieved 71 % biodegradation in 28 days but did not achieve the pass level of 60 % in the 10 day window. Therefore Cycloaliphatic Epoxide Resin ERL-4221 can be classified as readily biodegradable (but not passing the 10 day window).

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex IX, the bioaccumulation in aquatic species study does not need to be conducted as the substance has a low potential for bioaccumulation (the substance has a log octanol water partition coefficient less than 3). The reported partition coefficient is 1.34 (see Point 7.8) and is therefore less than the trigger of 3.0.

The substance 7 -oxabicyclo[4.1.0]hept-3 -ylmethyl 7 -oxabicyclo[4.1.0]heptane-3 -carboxylate can be expected to have a low potential for adsorption to soil (based on a Log P value of 1.34). The low potential for the substance 7 -oxabicyclo[4.1.0]hept-3 -ylmethyl 7 -oxabicyclo[4.1.0]heptane-3 -carboxylate to adsorp to soil was confirmed by using the KOCWIN estimation method. The Koc value was estimated to be 26.27 L/kg based on the experimentally derived Kow value.
