Description of key information

Read across to ethanol (CAS No. 64-17-5)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Potassium ethanolate is a salt only stable when humidity is excluded. In contact with water the substance reacts violently and forms ethanol and potassium hydroxide. Both substances are not classified regarding repeated dose toxicity according to CLP regulation Annex VI. It is therefore concluded that the reaction product of both substances is also not regarded as toxic after repeated exposure.

Justification for classification or non-classification

No data is available for potassium ethanolate with respect to repeated dose toxicity. However, as it rapidly hydrolyzes to form ethanol and potassium hydroxide, which are both non-toxic after repeated exposure, it can be assumed that potassium ethanolate is also non-toxic. Hence, classification according to Regulation 1272/2008 (CLP) and Directive 67/548/EEC (DSD) is not warranted.
