LC50 (96 h) > 100 mg/L for Oryzias latipes (OECD 203)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Three short-term studies with freshwater fish are available for triacetin (CAS 102-76-1). The key study was performed according to OECD 203 (GLP) with Oryzias latipes (Toray Research Center, 1998). A limit concentration of 100 mg/L did not cause mortality after 96 h. Thus, a LC50 (96 h) > 100 mg/L resulted. A second study by Toray Research Center (1998) investigated the toxicity over 14 days in a prolonged study according to OECD 203. During this study no mortality or effects on weight and mobility were observed (NOEC (14 d) ≥ 100 mg/L). The third was conducted according to an old national guideline with a test duration of only 48 hours study (Bogers, 1988). Using the solubiliser Tween 80 they observed a LC50 (48 h) of 174 mg/L (Cyprinus carpio). This result is in accordance with the results from the two other studies. The studies show a low toxicity of triacetin to fish under conditions tested.
